The Student Fabric Initiative - in collaboration with British Fashion Council and Institute of Positive Fashion - is a deadstock donation project created to encourage the donation of quality fabrics and components to students of BFC Colleges Council member universities.
This is a charitable project that the BFC undertakes on a yearly basis, and we at the materialist are proud to have been involved as the operational and logistics partner on the Initiative for the third consecutive year, liaising with donors, BFC and more than 30 universities.
For the 2024 edition we created a bespoke booking system which allowed universities and colleges to view and order available designer donations via the materialist website. The purpose of the Initiative is to help students get access to free quality materials and normalise the use of deadstock as part of their design practice.

The scheme’s ultimate ambition is to create a simple and efficient way for designer brands and universities to work together and provide practical support for future talent, bringing sustainability and circularity even closer to the heart of fashion education in the UK.

2024 donors include: Burberry, Eudon Choi, Labrum, Margaret Howell and Nicholas Daley.
