the materialist is proud to have powered the 2023 Student Fabric Initiative - a deadstock donation project in collaboration with British Fashion Council and the Institute of Positive Fashion. The Initiative was created to bring sustainability and circularity closer to fashion education in the UK, encouraging brands and universities to work together.

BA and MA students used deadstock textiles donated by a luxury British brand to create a design proposal that could be realised and showcased at the Institute of Positive Fashion Forum 2023. The project encouraged future talent to think creatively about deadstock and its use from the outset of the design process.

the materialist, which oversaw all deadstock fabric deliveries to 33 universities across the UK, is proud to have been at the core of the Initiative, managing all operations and facilitating partnerships between the donor, universities and BFC. In March 2023 the Student Fabric Initiative Competition was launched. 8 finalists were selected, and Anna Kalifatidou of the Bath School of Art and Design was announced as the winner.
